In August, Richard made his way to Charleston, South Carolina, to share his expertise with a group of passionate gilding enthusiasts, and what a memorable experience it turned out to be.
Richard, the guru behind Watergild Studios, is a name that many in the gilding world hold in high regard. With a wealth of knowledge and a passion for keeping the craft alive, he’s been instrumental in teaching and inspiring countless artists across the globe. His classes at the SOG event were a testament to this, offering a closer look into the art of gilding that left participants buzzing with excitement.
Richard Walker showcased his expertise in advanced gilding techniques during the Society of Gilders workshop in Charleston from August 5-9, where he provided hands-on instruction in both traditional and modern gilding practices.
A Closer Look at the Classes
Richard’s first class, Gilding for Artists, was a hands-on exploration of everything from water gilding to oil gilding, and of course, the Kolner Instacol techniques. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just getting started, Richard’s approach made these complex techniques feel accessible and fun. Students learned to create gesso panels, apply gold leaf, and experiment with new methods that are sure to enhance their artistic practice.

In his second class, Understanding the Kolner Instacol System, Richard introduced participants to the more contemporary side of gilding. With his guidance, students explored the ins and outs of the Instacol system, gaining valuable insights into producing high-quality gilded work. It’s no wonder that Richard is considered a guru in this field—his ability to make the technical approachable and the complex understandable is truly a gift.
Turning Challenges into Bonds
Of course, no event is without its surprises. As Tropical Storm Debby rolled into Charleston, the weather threatened to throw a wrench into the plans. But if there’s one thing that can be said about Richard and his students, it’s that they’re adaptable. Instead of letting the storm dampen their spirits, the group banded together, turning what could have been a setback into an opportunity for bonding.
